3 Ways to Fight Mold

In addition to being unsightly, mold in your home can create numerous health problems, from breathing issues to skin irritations, fevers and more. Below are some tips for keeping your home mold-free.

Treat topically. Homeowners often have their own mold-murdering solution they prefer. Whether you prefer vinegar, hydrogen peroxide or bleach, clean surfaces monthly to keep mold growth under control. Make sure you research your topical solutions before applying them – bleach to a painted wall can discolor it.

Add ventilation. In addition to removing mold when it pops up, adding ventilation to an under-ventilated space can be key in keeping mold at bay. Your bathroom and basement are prime mold spots, so decide whether or not you should add an extra window to open the space.

Seal spaces. A crack in your basement's foundation may be the culprit of the mold popping up. Have an expert do a walk-through with you to point out problem areas and then plug them up to battle mold even when you're off-duty.

Keep Your Fitness Goals on Track

Whether you're rebooting your routine or fine tuning your exercise program, setting goals is an important step to feeling your best. Below are five tips to help make and meet those goals all year long.

Be specific. When setting a goal, make sure it's specific, measurable, realistic, and time-bound. Something like "lose 10 pounds by April" will be more effective than "lose weight,” and "do 10 pull-ups" will keep you on track better than "get stronger."

Know why. If a goal is important to you, you should know why. Knowing how your goal will positively influence your life will help you follow through. Trimming down to feel more confident or gaining stamina to keep up with the kids are great motivators.

Find an accountability partner. Want to hit those goals? Don't do it alone. Having someone to answer to and keep you motivated can make a huge difference in achieving your goals. Having a set workout date with a friend or paid appointment with a trainer is more likely to keep you on track.

Reach for the weights. Women in particular tend to be afraid of using too much weight when working out, but using weights builds muscle that will burn more calories on a daily basis, even at rest. Incorporate dumbbells and barbells into your routine to truly change the shape of your body!

Recover right. When you start a fitness routine, it's easy to forget stretching and foam roller exercises, which help with workout recovery and optimal muscle performance. Forget this, and you may get sidelined from injuries or soreness, which are sure to kill your motivation.

10 Ways to Be More Energy Efficient at Home

We all want to save money while helping the environment, and one simple way to do that is to scrutinize your energy usage at home. Here are 10 easy, low-cost tips for making your house operate more efficiently.

1. Insulate the water heater. Older natural gas storage water heaters can lose a lot of heat through their walls. Wrapping a heater in an insulating jacket can prevent excess heat loss and energy waste, but should be left to a professional installer so as not to accidentally cover the top, bottom, thermostat or burner compartment.

2. Seal leaks with weatherstripping. Air sealing, specifically weatherstripping, eliminates drafts to save energy while improving air quality and comfort. Weatherstripping reduces air leakage by creating a tight seal between movable components such as doors and windows. Before application, detect air leaks and assess the ventilation. Find air leaks through a blower door test from a qualified technician, or by inspecting inside and outside the home.

3. Insulate water pipes. Insulate hot water pipes to reduce heat loss and keep the water from cooling off before it reaches the tap. Adding insulation also will prevent cold water pipes from freezing.

4. Replace or clean the furnace filter. Change the heating system's furnace air filter on a regular basis to keep air flowing without overworking equipment. This also keeps out dust and dirt that can lead to expensive repairs or early system failure. A clean furnace filter can lower natural gas consumption by up to 2 percent.

5. Use less hot water. Reducing hot water use is an easy, affordable way to see significant savings on energy and water bills. Run the automatic dishwasher only when full, and wash and rinse full loads of laundry in cold water. Install low-flow showerheads, and don't forget to check for and repair plumbing leaks.

6. Use ceiling fans. Save on heating costs by using an ENERGY STAR® certified ceiling fan, which helps warm air circulate better and allows for setting the furnace temperature lower.

7. Install a programmable or smart thermostat. Programmable and smart thermostats can lower heating expenses and fit any lifestyle. Set the thermostat at 68 F, and then program it to decrease the temperature 8 degrees when no one is home and overnight. Smart thermostats are similar to programmable thermostats, but they also perform more advanced functions. A smart thermostat allows you to monitor and control the temperature in your home remotely from your smartphone or other web-enabled device.

8. Look for ENERGY STAR. If purchasing a new appliance, make it an ENERGY STAR rated appliance. For instance, an ENERGY STAR certified refrigerator uses less energy than a regular 75-watt light bulb.

9. Lower the water heater thermostat. Set your water heater thermostat to 120 F to save energy and money. For most homeowners, storage water heaters set above 120 F are simply using more energy without providing any additional benefits. One set to even 140 F can waste $36 to $61 annually in standby heat loss, and more than $400 in demand loss. Be sure to turn down the water heater when going on vacation to avoid energy waste.

10. Be smart with the fireplace. Open-hearth fireplaces draw heated air from inside the home, sending it up the chimney. When using the fireplace, install a snug-fitting set of glass doors and crack open a nearby window. Doing so reduces the amount of heated interior air drawn into the fireplace and improves efficiency by up to 20 percent.Source: Peoples Gas

Sign up for automatic funds transfer: Instruct your bank or credit union to automatically transfer money from your savings or other accounts to your checking account to cover any shortages. Note: you may have to pay a fee for this service.

Sign up for low-balance notices: Sign up for text or email notices from your bank or credit union if your checking account balance drops below a certain amount.

Make sure funds are available: Make sure deposits into your checking account are actually available for your use before you spend that money. Note: review your bank or credit union's "funds availability" policy.

Take advantage of technology: Frequently check your account balances online, by phone, or nearby ATM machine.

Check all transactions on your statements: Carefully review your monthly account statements, looking for fraudulent transactions as well as taking into account any checks written and deposits made that may not appear until next month's statement.

Get Moving

Don't be afraid to become friends with your dentist. Brown has her dentist on speed-dial, even calling or texting him in the middle of the night sometimes. 10 Steps to Quit Smoking

The majority of smokers often think about quitting. In fact, nearly 70 percent of smokers say they want to quit but only 6 percent are able to each year. However, quitting is extremely difficult, and it's important to put your best foot forward. Below are 10 steps from BecomeAnEX.org to make and execute a plan to quit.

1. Set a quit date, and be strategic

Some smokers prefer to dive right in and just start quitting. It's best to intentionally setting a date to quit smoking. Big changes in life benefit from good planning. Take a look at your calendar and be strategic about when it would be a good time to quit. Consider quitting on a day without too many temptations (like a holiday party) or stressors (like a looming work deadline).

2. Identify triggers and track cigarettes

Much like using a step counter to track your activity if you're trying to get in shape or lose weight, figuring out what makes you want to smoke is part of your quit plan. "Triggers" are the things that cue you to smoke. Some common triggers are having a cup of coffee, driving, going out drinking or stress. 3. Beat your triggers

Keep yourself motivated. Make a list of "reasons I want to quit smoking" and tuck it into your wallet, purse, car, bathroom mirror, office … or everywhere!

9. Go

You know when your triggers will be popping up. And you know how to beat them when they do. Get up and attack the day. Get dressed, eat, grab your bottle of water and your quit smoking aid and go! Just focus on getting through this one day without smoking. You can survive your first day of quitting smoking. And then take it one day at a time.

10. If you need to, pick yourself back up

Quitting is hard, and often takes more than one try. If you smoked after your quit day, pick yourself back up. It helps to understand why you slipped up in the first place. Were you stressed out? 4 Ways to Jumpstart Your Credit Score

Improving your credit score can sometimes be a lengthy project. But, consumer advisor Brian Acton tells Yahoo Finance, if you are planning to apply for a mortgage or other major loan, there are five strategies you can use that can help bump up your credit score in as little as 30 days:

Become an authorized user – You can piggyback off someone else’s good credit by having them add you as an authorized user to an account they’ve had for some time. As an authorized user, you can benefit from this responsibly managed account once it is added to your credit profile. (Understand, however, that if you use the account irresponsibly, both your credit scores will suffer.)

Request a credit limit increase – If you have a timely payment history with your credit card issuer, the issuer will likely grant you a limit increase if you ask for it. Since your credit utilization rate figures heavily in your credit score, an increase in the limit can help your score –so long as you resist increasing your spending.

Pay down your cards – Because, as indicated above, a lower balance positively affects your credit utilization rate, make the effort to curb your current spending and use any extra funds you can muster to pay down existing debts.

Check for credit report errors – An error on your report can weigh down your score, while removing one can result in great improvement. Since most credit reporting errors are resolved in about 30 days, pull your report from AnnualCreditReport.com and go over it with a fine tooth comb. If something seems amiss – such as an unreported debt payoff – disputing it right away can make a big difference in your credit score.

How to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint at Home

For more Americans, heating and cooling your home accounts for nearly 50 percent of personal carbon emissions.

Adequate insulation. Check your home's insulation to make sure you're not losing that warm air your home works so hard to provide you with.

Energy Star systems. From windows to appliances, using Energy Star-rated systems can help your home work more efficiently.

Programmable thermostats. Set your thermostat to lower the temperature of your home when you're out, or asleep.  

Smarter lights. Switch from old, incandescent light bulbs to new light emitting diodes (LED) options which last longer and use less energy.

Monitor water use. Many of use use over ten gallons of water a day. Take shorter, cooler showers, make sure your dishwasher or washing machine is full when you run it, and turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth or shaving.
